WHAT IS LINE DANCING?
Line dancing is a choreographed routine of steps using various dance styles from ballroom, latin, country & western and more - making it a truly diverse dance form. Because it incorporates so many styles of dance, you can expect to hear all kinds of music from the latest chart hits to country to motown!
Although most would associate line dancing with country music, its roots can be traced back much further than the country & western hype of the 80s and 90s. Arguably stemming from folk dancing, line dance has evolved many times over the years, just as it does today. The 1950s dance "The Madison", as well as disco classics such as "The Electric Slide" or "Bus Stop" and 90s dance craze "The Macarena" can all be classed as line dances.
It's hard to disagree that line dancing hit a massive high in the 90s with the release of country hits such as Boot Scootin' Boogie and Achy Breaky Heart. While some still embrace the old style, choosing to wear the Stetson and boots, the majority have ditched them in favour of comfortable clothing and proper dance shoes.

It's Cheap! - While some forms of dance can cost up to £10 an hour, line dancing classes in Sheffield cost on average, just £2 an hour
Age is just a number! - Line dancing is what you make it, it can be as energetic or low impact as you want, meaning it is suitable for most age groups from children to their grandparents. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and may not be suitable for smaller children.
Friendly pastime - Every dance class is a social event, learn to dance without pressure whilst having fun and enjoying meeting new people.
Practice in your own time - The internet is filled with a wealth of websites for line dancing, including scripts for all dances taught. Youtube is filled with demo/teaching videos meaning you can watch and learn. There has never been a better time to learn to dance.
Line Dancing is what you make it. You can learn the steps and dance away or you can make it as funky or graceful as you like. Below are some demos of dances showing some of the various styles/levels you can achieve! Bare in mind that you aren't going to be doing some of these dances straight away, this is to give you an idea of what you can achieve over time. You will recognise some of these songs too!

Since 1996, the UK line dance scene has had its own award ceremony, to celebrate our best talent! More than a thousand people flood to the Norbreck Castle in Blackpool annually for the sell out LDF Crystal Boot Awards . For those who say line dancing is dead, check out the video below (sorry about the quality - it's a facebook live video!) - winner of 2017 Intermediate Dance of the year and overall Dance of the year, Ain't Misbehavin' by Guyton Mundy, Jo Thompson Szymanski & Amy Glass. There are a few people, eh?!

Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and flat or low heeled, smooth soled shoes
